241 Hobs

Hobs and fridges are the most used appliances in the kitchen. Choosing the right ones for your needs and budget isn’t easy because there are many types of hobs that come in different materials (stainless steel hobs, glass ceramic hobs, crystal hobs, etc.) and you might find it hard to choose the right one. Let us give you some tips to help you choose one. Let’s start from the size. The market offers four standard hobs sizes:

- 30 cm hobs: they are elements that can be combined to get the overall size you want;
- 60 cm hobs: it’s the classic 4 burners model with the knobs put in front or laterally;
- 75 cm hobs: they have 5 to 6 burners and so they can have on more pots cooking at the same time.
- 90 cm hobs: since it’s very big it’s not very common, but thanks to its large extension, it allows for a comfortable use of the 5 to 6 burners.

As for the types of hobs the market offers, we can get:

. Gas hobs are the most common because they are less expensive and they are closer to traditional cooking methods. However, they’re not very efficient energy-wise because not all of the flames are conveyed on the pan. Part of the heat is dispersed in the air (about 60% of energy is dispersed). The number of burners depends on the size you want to choose. In the classic 60 cm hobs there are 4 burners of different diameters (110, 91, 64 and 43 mm) so to optimize the size of the flame. They’re fired up by an electric command. Make sure there’s a safety device that blocks the gas flow if the flame goes out. The convenience about this kind of hob is that any kind of pot and pan can be used and that its price never goes over 300€.

Electric hobs
Electric hobs are made in ceramic glass. This material is really tough, anti-scratch and beautiful! The good thing about these hobs is that you can install them wherever you want because they don’t need gas supply but only a power socket. So they are the best choice for island kitchens, for outdoor kitchens and for attic kitchens. The heating of the hob can happen in two ways: by electic coils or by halogen plates. More pros are: no free flames, pots’ stability and they’re easy to clean. The big drawback is their electic consumption because 50% of the energy is absorbed by the glass ceramic surface. Don’t forget: these hobs need specific flatware!

Induction hobs
Induction hobs are the latest technology in the kitchen! It is an electrically generated magnetic field that “induces” the heat in the pot. This heat gets into the food. Where is the revolution? The heat doesn’t disperse in the air like for gas or electic hobs but it is produced by the pots themselves! This process heats up food in no time and it’s only the pot that becomes hot so they are generally safer. The drawback here is that you need specific flatware and the power consumption. Its initial price needs an big investment too.
